Growing up, my Mom cooked the same way I do now. She would look in her Pantry until she found some things that she thought would go well together and feed us growing kids. Then, we (like my kids) would pester her:
What are we having, but what is it called, what is it’s NAME!!!
until she finally made something up. LOL! Supposedly, this stuff is called Girl Scout Stew because it can be cooked over a fire, but I don’t ever remember eating this over a fire during Girl Scout camping! So, you know my theory!

What is the difference between a soup and a stew?
Soups and stews are comfort foods that provide warmth during the colder months. Some believe these dishes to be virtually identical. However, there are indeed notable differences between them.
Generally speaking, a traditional soup will have a broth or clear liquid base which has been seasoned, while stews are typically made from meats and vegetables cooked in liquid until tender.
The consistency of a soup is usually thin, with small pieces of ingredients like meat, beans, or vegetables suspended within it.
The consistency of stew can vary from thin to thick depending on the amount of liquid used – however it often contains large chunks of ingredients that have been simmered for an extended period.
Both dishes can incorporate the same methods of preparation and the same types of ingredients – giving them similar flavor profiles – but resourceful cooks must follow different steps to achieve each type of dish.
What are good soup toppings?
Soup toppings can provide an interesting twist to a classic dish. Sprinkling herbs, spices, seeds, or nuts on top of a bowl of warm soup can add delightful flavor, as well as provide additional nutritional benefits.
Chopped fresh vegetables are one way to give your soup a crunchy texture and flavor combination; experiment with different peppers, onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes for various flavors.
Freshly squeezed citrus juice is another great topping for adding acidity and brightness to soups like minestrone or lentil; the sharpness can help balance out the richness of broths.
Lastly, croutons and crackers add wonderful texture and crunch – get creative with different flavors and styles, such as jalapeno cheddar croutons or sesame thyme crackers!
How do you store leftover stew?
Proper storage of leftovers is an important component of food safety. Stews can be stored in an airtight container and kept in the refrigerator for up to four days.
Freezing is also an option; portion the stew into single-serving airtight containers and freeze it.
When reheating stew, ensure that it is heated thoroughly by heating it until it boils, then simmered for at least two minutes before serving.
By following these simple steps, you can take advantage of your leftover stew with no worries about food safety.
What is the most popular stew ingredient?
One of the most popular ingredients used in stews is beef. This is primarily due to its versatility.
Its naturally rich flavor also provides stews with an unparalleled depth and complexity that has made it a perennial favorite.
Other popular stew ingredients, such as vegetable and herb combinations like those found in Italian minestrone or chicken stock and smoked paprika, add variety to traditional beef-based recipes without sacrificing the homey comfort that defines all types of stew.

The best beef stews are made with the right cut of meat, like chuck roast, brisket or round. Leaner cuts (which are good for the grill) lack the connective tissue that turns into gelatin as it cooks. That keeps the meat juicy and tender while also thicken and enriching the stew.
Like soup, there are tons of different types of stew, but they all start with the same basic concept: Large chunks of meat, seafood, vegetables or beans simmered in a flavorful liquid — broth, wine, beer, tomato juice or even water.
The three main thickening agents for gravies are flour, cornflour and arrowroot. The first two are normally used in savoury dishes while arrowroot tends to be used in sweet dishes – that said, arrowroot will work in a savoury dish as it has no flavour.
Add spices such as turmeric, coriander and cumin at the early stage of cooking, when you are frying onions and garlic, to enhance the taste of the beef stew. Fresh herbs like coriander and bay leaves also contribute a distinct flavour without making the dish too spicy for the younger members of the family.
It is a good idea to always taste the stew before serving. Adding a bit of sauce, some herbs, some seasoning or even brown sugar or honey can just lift the taste. I had a friend who swore by putting a spoonful of peanut butter in her stews to flavour and thicken them.
For more than 80 years, the DINTY MOORE® brand has been the trusted name in beef stew. With its fresh cut potatoes and carrots in a rich gravy with large chunks of real beef, DINTY MOORE® Beef Stew is an affordable complete meal for hard working Americans.
In the crafting menu, you should see a crafting area that is made up of a 3x3 crafting grid. To make suspicious stew, place 1 red mushroom, 1 brown mushroom, 1 bowl, and 1 flower in the 3x3 crafting grid.
Vinegar can add depth of flavour to soups, sauces, and stews. Especially great for tomato-based recipes, you can add a couple of tablespoons of vinegar towards the end of the cooking process to amplify the flavours of your other ingredients.
After you bring your stew to a gentle simmer it's important to cook with the lid on as it helps to trap the liquid inside, cook the ingredients evenly, enhance the combination of flavours and prevent the ingredients from drying out.
In the event that your goal is to keep moisture in—like when your pot of soup, stew, or sauce is already at the right consistency, but you want to keep cooking the vegetables and melding the flavors—leave the lid on to keep any more liquid from evaporating.
A stew is a combination of solid food ingredients that have been cooked in liquid and served in the resultant gravy. Ingredients can include any combination of vegetables and may include meat, especially tougher meats suitable for slow-cooking, such as beef, pork, venison, rabbit, lamb, poultry, sausages, and seafood.
Cornstarch has twice the thickening power of flour. When a gravy, sauce, soup or stew recipe calls for flour, use half as much cornstarch to thicken. To thicken hot liquids, first mix cornstarch with a little cold water until smooth. Gradually stir into hot liquid until blended.
Watery stews occur when you have a lot of liquid in your stew but not enough time to let the mixture reduce. You can also end up with a watery beef stew when you've added a lot of vegetables. Zucchini, celery, peppers and tomatoes all have a high water content that can increase the total volume of liquid in your stew.
Dust the beef with flour and shake off the excess. Add some oil to the pot and sear the meat until it is well browned. Add 1.5 cups of beef broth and 1 LBS of stew meat into an InstantPot and pressure cook for 20 minutes (with quick release). Meat will be superbly tender, juicy, and delicious.
For example, chuck is a lean and tender cut of beef that works well in stew. However, if you would prefer a thicker and more flavorful stew, short ribs or oxtail may be better choices for you. To make a delicious stew, choose good-quality ingredients.
