When my hair started falling out from work stress, I realized I needed an “after work” routine. This was April 2020, about six weeks into the COVID lockdown. I worked in higher ed at the time, and April is always an extremely busy month. This plus the COVID stress plus not having any work boundaries meant that I was working waaaay into my evenings and on weekends. Of course, that was neither sustainable or healthy, and my body let me know. Once I realized MY HAIR WAS FALLING OUT FROM WORK STRESS, I knew I needed to make some changes. Here’s what I did: 1️⃣ Reminded myself that nothing about my job was life or death 2️⃣ Uninstalled the email app from my phone 3️⃣ Started implementing a solid after-work routine. Every day at 5 PM (sometimes a little later but for sure before 5:30), I would close my laptop and walk away from my desk. The physical act of closing my laptop and standing up was my signal to myself that I was “leaving” work. I would then put on my sneakers and go on a short walk with my partner. During our walk, we’d talk about our day (even though we were essentially locked in a 1 bedroom condo 24/7😅), decide what to make for dinner, and generally just create both physical and mental space from work. There was no working allowed when we got back home. Even though these were very simple things, they helped me take ownership of my time and remind me that “work from home” doesn’t mean “work all the time.” So whether you are working remotely or working form the office, you need an after work routine to help you mentally leave work at work. And because today is the first day of Mental Health Awareness Month, here are a few of podcast episodes that can help you prioritize your wellbeing even as you reach your career goals: Episode 47: Prioritizing First Gen Mental Health with Latina Therapist Daisy Gómez https://lnkd.in/dYMJ2U-mEpisode 54: Changing Your Approach to Work https://lnkd.in/dEPbQ6CmEpisode 70: Managing Work Stress https://lnkd.in/dzwZEWG8Episode 76: Why Your Wellness is Essential to the Collective https://lnkd.in/dBp3tkuyEpisode 94: Increasing Your Salary by Regulatong your Nervous System https://lnkd.in/dvKJm3y4

Thank you for sharing your story. Many of us suffer from stress (one kind or another). We try to ignore it, but it shows up in many ways such as you pointed out: hair loss, skin breakouts, etc. I'm still working on finding my balance as well.

I'll keep this in mind, thanks for sharing. I hold my stress inward & see a lot of physical reactions like hair loss, skin breakouts, etc.

If you have a job interview coming up, PRACTICE WHAT YOURE GONNA SAY!!!Employers can tell who is practicing and who is winging it. Say the words out loud. Practice. Practice. Practice. If you don’t have an interview coming up, you can still practice by having more casual conversations that turn into job interviews just because you’re so good at talking about yourself and your skills! Listen to Episode 84 of The First Gen Coach Podcast to learn how to do this without being gross: https://lnkd.in/eSZi8BQGIf you DO have an interview coming up, I have a whole Interview Prep Playlist where I cover topics such as what to say, what questions to ask, how to increase your confidence, and how to advocate for yourself in the interview process! In this episode of The First Gen Coach Podcast, I talk to Lizbet Barajas (@lizbettalksmoney on Instagram) about everything from paying off debt, to having way too many credit cars (hi, it’s me. I’m the problem, it’s me), to walking away from a job. Lizbet shares how she uses budgeting as a tool for financial freedom and how actually having a plan for your money is not restrictive but is actually a pathway to that financial freedom. As a career coach, I was personally impressed with how Lizbet levered her budget to make powerful career moves without lowering her standards or giving up her passion to travel. About today’s guest:Lizbet is a first-gen Mexican-American, mom of two, and money coach for moms. With the use of a budget and her travel hacking skills, she’s paid off over $80,000 of debt while still traveling with her family. This is the second episode in April’s Financial Literacy Month series! I almost didn’t post this video because of all the “ummms” I said. But then I remembered I tell my podcast listeners to own their leadership and to give themselves credit where credit is due. So here I am, owning my leadership. Since January 2023, I’ve been serving as the South Florida Chapter President of the CHCI Alumni Association. I deeply admire all the other regional chapter leaders and have always felt like I wasn’t doing enough in my chapter like they were in theirs. This weekend I realized that I’ve been caught in the comparison trap, and that’s prevented me from seeing just how much I have done for the CHCI South Florida chapter. In preparation for the second annual networking reception hosted by Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI).✅ I sent over a dozen personalized emails to local community members and organizations who are aligned with CHCI’s mission to Develop the Next Generation of Latino Leaders ✅ I personally reached out to local alumni to invite them to this event. ✅ I asked the wonderful Abel J Ramos Taype who serves as VP for support with outreachBut it’s not about the things I did. It’s about the IMPACT they had. (Hint: this is how you frame things on your resume!) After Friday’s event, ✅ 2 alumni volunteered to lead events✅ We received interest from alumni about joining the regional chapter board ✅ A community member offered their venue to hold our next event✅ A local nonprofit organization is partnering with another chapter in a different city ✅ 30% of the alumni attendees were there for their FIRST alumni event! My heart is so full 💓 I have a lot to follow up this week (remember that in careers, whoever follows up the most wins), but it’s the kind of work that energized me. At the end of the day, none of this is about me. I truly am passionate about building up my community and I am so grateful for this platform. I’m always down to talk all things CHCI so feel free to DM with questions or let me know in the comments if you’re an alumni!
